How to extend the lifespan of firefighter protective clothing using smart reinforcements

In protective clothing for firefighters, not all areas of the garment work the same.

Knees, elbows, and other contact points are constantly subjected to abrasion, friction, and mechanical stress during each intervention. It is precisely these areas that, in most cases, determine the garment's lifespan, even when the rest of the fabric continues to offer its full protective capacity.

The challenge for PPE manufacturers is clear: How can durability be increased without increasing the overall weight of the garment or compromising its certification?

The challenge

Firefighter protective equipment must withstand extremely demanding use while maintaining its performance against heat, flame and other risks inherent to the intervention.

The reinforcement panels must be able to:

  • Resist intense abrasion.
  • Maintain inherent fire protection.
  • Offer antistatic properties.
  • Protect against electric arcs.
  • Integrate into certified garments without compromising their performance.
  • Maintain its performance throughout the entire useful life of the PPE.

Using conventional fabric as reinforcement is not an option.

The reinforced areas must offer the same level of protection as the rest of the garment.


The solution

IBQ-FXP-005 has been specifically developed as a reinforcement fabric for protective garments.

Strategically applied to knees, elbows and other high-wear areas, it significantly increases the mechanical resistance of the garment without needing to increase the overall weight.

With a construction of 250 g/m², It combines inherently flame-resistant fibers, Cordura®, cotton and antistatic fiber to offer a solution that unites mechanical strength and multi-risk protection in a single fabric.


Protection where it really matters

Instead of making a heavier garment, the reinforcement is concentrated only in the areas subjected to greater wear and tear.

Therefore, IBQ-FXP-005 combines high mechanical resistance with certified protection against multiple risks:

  • EN ISO 11612 – Heat and flame.
  • EN ISO 11611 – Welding.
  • EN 1149 – Antistatic properties.
  • EN 61482 – Electric arc.
  • EN 13034 – Splashes of liquid chemicals.

Furthermore, it offers abrasion resistance of up to 150,000 Martindale cycles, helping the garment maintain its performance for longer, even in the most stressed areas.
