CATHERINA

As key players in the Holistex Group, IBQ Textiles, Meroltex and Apreslan embody the strength of collaboration in advancing textile technology. Highlighting this synergy, we are pleased to present the CATHERINA project, which stands for Intelligent and Adaptive Thermal Camouflage, a pioneering initiative in defence technologies. Apreslan plays a crucial role in this project, providing innovative solutions that improve the adaptability of textiles in defence applications.

The CATHERINA project stands out as one of the 54 projects selected for possible funding by the European Defence Fund (EDF) 2023, standing out among the 236 proposals received. This selection underlines the innovative approach of the project and its alignment with the EDF's strategic objectives to strengthen Europe's defence capabilities through cutting-edge research and technology.

About the CATHERINA project

CATHERINA is part of the European Defence Fund (EDF) 2023 initiatives aimed at integrating innovative textile technologies to meet future military needs. The project, with an expected duration of 38 months and an estimated budget of almost 4 million, is fully funded by the European Union. Its aim is to revolutionise military equipment by making it smarter and more adaptable to different environmental conditions.

The CATHERINA project is driven by a diverse and expert consortium. The collaboration includes:

  • GAHN Logistics Management and Consulting, SA (Coordinator) Spain
  • Aalto Korkeakoulusaatio SR Finland
  • Apreslan Sizings SA (Apreslan) Spain
  • Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf Germany
  • Institute of Photonic Sciences Foundation Spain
  • OMT Solutions BV Netherlands
  • Voxdale BV Belgium

This consortium brings together leading organisations from across Europe, each bringing expertise to increase the innovative potential of the project in textile technology. CATHERINA’s main objective is to integrate optically adaptive camouflage with infrared and thermal detection resistant properties to create a smart textile to protect tomorrow’s soldiers in the theatre of battle. Each developed feature brings unique capabilities to create a holistic and innovative textile solution towards a multi-level disguise, contributing to the safety of soldiers and equipment of European armed forces.

Wider impact of the European Defence Fund

The European Defence Fund (EDF) plays a key role in strengthening Europe's defence capabilities. In 2023, the EDF has committed to investing in 54 ambitious defence projects, with total funding of €1,031 million, demonstrating a strong focus on collaborative research and development between Member States. CATHERINA is part of this important initiative to boost the technological cutting edge of the European defence industry.

Next steps

Although the CATHERINA project has been selected for funding under the 2023 EDF call for proposals, the final signature of the grant is still pending and is expected to be finalised by the end of this year. This period is crucial as it involves completing the formalities required to officially secure the grant.

Inclusion in the CATHERINA project underlines the Holistex Group’s commitment to advancing defence technology through collaboration and innovation. As the project moves towards the grant signing phase, the consortium’s expertise is set to pioneer solutions that will define the future of military operations and security. Participation in this project not only highlights the capabilities of the Holistex Group, but also its strategic role in contributing to a safer and more technologically advanced Europe.
